My husband was servicing our tractor yesterday. We are new to tractors. Our question is...There is an oil fill cap on top of the engine for the oil, there is an oil fill cap on the back for the hydraulics we know what to do with those - what is the 3rd cap for on the right side of the engine just behind the radiator? Is it for the power steering or something else? We couldn't find out what it was for in any of our books.

Thanks for the help.

Leslie

I have a John Deere Model 670 and I have the same oil caps. The two caps are simply duplicates. I've heard from others that these diesel engines are used in more than one application and in one case the top cap will be most convenient and in another the side cap will be easiest to access. ....

This is correct. Different applications require the different oil hole. I asked this same questions many months ago on my JD950. Someone had a good idea that on my JD 950 when changing oil that dumping the new oil into the TOP hole would maybe pre lube the engine some before you started it up after the oil change as there always seems to be some lag time for the new oil to fill the filter and move about the engine.
